About the Library<\/h1>\r\n\r\n\r\n

This project is the working home of Intervention Design Thinking (IDT) \u2014 a framework for understanding how interventions, from policy to protest to a well-timed conversation, shape the long-term trajectory of complex systems. This site holds three things: the paper that introduces the framework, a growing library of real-world cases studied through its lens, and an Explorer tool for browsing that library by pattern, power, and place.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

01 \u2014 THE IDEA<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

What Is Intervention Design Thinking?<\/h2>\r\n\r\n

Systems are always changing. Ecological systems evolve, institutions adapt, cultures shift, economies reorganize. The question IDT asks isn\u2019t whether systems change, but how interventions \u2014 the policies, movements, infrastructures, and everyday practices that try to redirect them \u2014 actually move systems, and why some produce durable transformation while others stall, dissipate, or backfire.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

IDT defines an intervention broadly: any action, structure, relationship, or condition that alters the behavior or future trajectory of a system. That includes obvious interventions like legislation or protest, and less obvious ones \u2014 a sidewalk, a platform algorithm, a tax structure \u2014 that quietly shape behavior long after anyone remembers they were designed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The framework organizes interventions into three domains: Top-Down (through policy and formal authority), Bottom-Up (through community and lived experience), and Middle-Out (through the institutions and networks that coordinate between the two). It also argues that lasting change depends less on any single intervention than on the coherence between interventions operating across all three \u2014 and that intervening well requires both force and care. As Martin Luther King Jr. put it, \u201cpower without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

02 \u2014 WHY<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

Why This Library Exists<\/h2>\r\n\r\n

IDT began as a practical problem, not a theory. It grew out of systems mapping and resilience-planning work for Transforming Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s Food Systems Together (THFT), a statewide initiative led by Dr. Albie Miles at the University of Hawai\u02bbi\u2013West O\u02bbahu, where the question was concrete: which interventions would actually strengthen Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s food security? Answering it raised bigger questions \u2014 what counts as an intervention, and what portfolio of interventions is required to move a system at all \u2014 that turned out to apply well beyond food systems.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This library is where those questions get tested against real cases: pattern by pattern, from a free-hugs campaign to a Supreme Court ruling, mapped by intervention type, country, emotional tone, and the Love\/Power dynamic each one expresses.<\/p>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
