Radical transparency as infrastructure. The Sunshine Network is a distributed practice of making power visible — tracking money, mapping relationships, documenting decisions, and publishing the findings in forms that communities can actually use. Sunlight as a resource, not just a metaphor.

The Case for Radical Transparency

The most durable political victories of the 20th century were not won through superior argument — they were won when someone made the hidden legible. The civil rights movement won not when it persuaded white moderates through moral argument but when television cameras at Selma made the violence visible to people who had been insulated from it. Campaign finance reform advances only when donor lists are published. Regulatory capture collapses when the revolving door is documented.

Power operates most effectively in the dark. Not because power-holders are uniquely evil, but because opacity is structurally advantageous — it allows consequences to remain unattributed, decisions to remain uncontested, and patterns to remain invisible. Sunshine is the specific remedy for opacity.

What the Network Tracks

Money Flows

Who funds the policy organizations, media outlets, academic research, and advocacy campaigns that shape public discourse? Following the money reveals the narrative economy behind the Mythcoin ledger. Funding transparency is the foundation of epistemic independence.

Relationship Mapping

Board membership, advisory roles, consulting relationships, revolving-door employment patterns. The same small network of individuals often governs across government, industry, civil society, and academia — invisible until mapped.

Decision Documentation

Who was in the room when the decision was made? What was the stated rationale? What evidence was considered and what was excluded? Decision documentation makes retrospective accountability possible — without it, institutions can always claim they did their best with what they knew.

Outcome Tracking

What actually happened after the policy was implemented? Who benefited, who was harmed, what was measured, what was not measured? Outcome tracking closes the accountability loop — and is systematically underfunded compared to policy advocacy.

Sunshine as Community Practice

The Sunshine Network is not solely an investigative journalism function. It is a distributed community practice — the local school board meeting that gets documented and published, the zoning variance that gets tracked from application to approval, the police department budget that gets analyzed and shared with neighborhood associations.

Professional investigative journalism is essential but insufficient. It cannot cover every local institution at the resolution that community accountability requires. The Sunshine Network extends transparency infrastructure to the granular level where most power is actually exercised day-to-day.

Cyberfolk and Sunshine

Sunshine Network practice is inherently cyberfolk: documentation, analysis, and publication as participatory community activity. The tools should be open-source, the findings should be freely shared, and the practice should be teachable to anyone with the motivation to learn it. Transparency cannot itself be proprietary.
